Muckers Meeting
A Back to Basics Big Book Study
The Muckers meeting is a focused study of the first 89 pages of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. It is a return to the foundation. A back to basics look at the Twelve Steps as they were originally laid out and practiced.
This meeting is called “Muckers” because beginners are encouraged to bring their Big Book and use it. Highlight it. Underline it. Write in the margins. The goal is not to keep the book clean, but to understand it. We believe the Big Book was meant to be studied, marked up, and lived with.
Each week centers on a specific Step. The goal is not discussion alone, but understanding and application. The beginner is guided through the Step directly from the Big Book, using the exact paragraphs that describe how it was done. The Steps are treated as instructions to be followed, not just ideas to be talked about.
We believe the Big Book contains the answers to the alcoholic’s problems, but those answers are not found through casual reading. They reveal themselves through careful study, reflection, and action. This meeting is structured to help the reader slow down, look closely, and understand what the book is actually saying.
This meeting also serves as sponsorship training. By studying the book closely and marking it up together, we learn how to show others where to look and how to study. Mucking up the book is not just for personal understanding, but to prepare us to guide the next alcoholic through the same process with clarity and confidence.
We use prepared annotations of the first 89 pages, breaking each paragraph down line by line for clarity and comprehension. This removes confusion and allows the reader to engage the text directly, free from slogans, shortcuts, or repeated narratives.
This meeting is practical, structured, and focused. There is no pressure to perform or share beyond your comfort. You are invited to read, listen, write, and take action. The work is personal, but it is done together.
The Muckers meeting is for the alcoholic who wants to know exactly how the first members recovered and is willing to follow the directions as they are written.
