Big Book Deep Dive
The Deep Dive Big Book Study is where we slow the whole thing down and actually read what the book says.
It is a line by line, sentence by sentence examination of the first 164 pages of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. We don’t skim. We don’t rush. We don’t settle for “I think it means…” We stay close to the text and let the words do what they were written to do.
This is a slow crawl, not a sprint. At the pace we move, it takes roughly 65 weeks to work our way through the first 164 pages. That pace is intentional. Depth requires time. Understanding grows when we linger long enough for the meaning to surface.
We also take the Big Book seriously as a historical document. We explore the world it came from, the people behind the stories, and the real context that shaped the language. We talk about who’s who in the book, what was happening around those early members, and how certain ideas developed as the fellowship took form.
Everything we cover is supported by contemporary, sourced material from the period in which the Big Book was written. We rely on documented history, original letters, early writings, and primary sources. We do not teach opinion, folklore, or hearsay. When something is said, it can be traced back to where it came from.
A big part of the Deep Dive is busting popular narratives that get repeated in the rooms. Not to argue. Not to be clever. But to get honest. Many well-worn sayings sound right but don’t line up with the page or the history. When we return to the source, the program becomes cleaner, simpler, and more powerful.
Despite the depth, this meeting is not stiff or academic. It’s fun and interactive. Questions are welcomed. Observations are shared. Light bulbs go on in real time. There’s laughter in the room and curiosity at the table. Learning happens together.
This meeting is for the alcoholic who wants more than familiarity. It’s for anyone tired of secondhand explanations and ready to understand the Big Book as it was written, in context, and without shortcuts.
The Deep Dive Big Book Study isn’t about getting through the book.
It’s about letting the book get all the way through us.
